Labour people have lots of good ideas for how to make their communities better – that’s why they are passionate about politics. Often, Labour supporters are already involved in a range of community organisations that share Labour’s values. It’s already been suggested here that the party should involve these community organisations in policy making, but the reverse is also true.
Branch and constituency Labour parties should work with community organisations and others to campaign directly for the things we believe in. If we think that children from the most deprived areas need access to better services, let’s work together to lobby local and national government, raise funds, or mobilise volunteers to make those services available. If we think that everyone should be paid a living wage, let’s work with local employers to make sure they pay it. If we disagree with local NHS cuts, let’s campaign against them.
If we could mobilise Labour members, activists and supporters in this way, Labour could deliver on its values whether or not we’re in office.
